Toolbar button for 'Define Name' (Excel XP)

I use INSERT, NAME, DEFINE quite a lot. It occurred to me to put in a toolbar button in for that function so I don't have to keep going through the menu. However, I can't find a command button or toolbar that includes that function.

Is it there somewhere and I'm just overlooking it? I've done custom buttons before but in the case wouldn't know the command string to apply.

    Thanks,
    BH Davis

    Try the following:
    - Select Tools | Customize.
    - Click on the Insert menu.
    - Click on the Name submenu.
    - Drag the Define... item to the desired location on one of the toolbars.
    - Hold down the Ctrl key while dropping the item.
    - Holding down Ctrl copies the item, instead of moving it.
    - Right-click the new toolbar item and change its properties the way you like.

You may also want to take a look at Jan Karel Pieterse's free Name Manager add-in. It has many more features than the built-in dialog.

Ahhh, there in lies the problem. I don't have a NAMES choice listed under the INSERT menu choice in the VIEW, TOOLBARS, CUSTOMIZE ....just not there ! Sounds like it should be though from your response.

I meant the Insert menu in the menu bar at the top of the Excel window, not in the Customize dialog (but the Customize dialog must be open, of course).

In XL2K, the Name Command appears to be under "Built-in menus", not "Insert," and I can't find "Define" anywhere.

Ctrl+Drag does not appear to work in XL2K.

Strange, it has worked in all versions of Office since Office 95 at least.

    Hans,

Thanks ! That worked just fine. I didn't know (among a zillion other things) that you could drag from the menus like that.

Much appreciated! Would you consider letting me compensate you for all you help??

That's very kind of you, but I do this just for fun. Your thanks are compensation enough for me!

Here's a link to an article from 1996 that mentions Ctrl+dragging to copy toolbar buttons (and remember, the menu bar is technocally a toolbar too):

I just reread your original post, and realized that the Customize dialog box must be displayed before you can drag from the menus.

    Hans,

I understand and appreciate your involvement here. I do something similar at www.woodweb.com where I check most of the forums daily and give what advice and opinions that I can.

    Why not hit control-F3?
