Auto-archive creating new .PST folder (2003/SP2)

I've been having lots of problems with auto-archive since upgrading to OL 2003. I fixed most of them by creating a new mail profile, but that introduced a new problem: I do not use the default names or locations for my .PST files. Auto-archive is set up to send old messages to D:RobertOutlookDataarchive.pst That's working. However, every time auto-archive runs it opens C:RobertOutlookDataarchive.pst That directory and .PST didn't exist before Outlook created them. Each time this happens I go into Data File Managemnt and remove that .pst file, but that entry is created again next time it runs. I can't delete the .pst file from my HD -- even when OL is closed XP says the file is in use.

Should I just live with this weirdness?

Goodness, Robert, if it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> After you close Outlook, can you open Task Manager and see if Outlook is still running in the nackgound? This could be caused by PDA sync software, message virus scan programs, PST backup applications, and some other things.

Stangely, the archive path setting doesn't seem to be in the Registry, I turned AutoArchive on, closed Outlook, and didn't see the path under:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice11.0Outloo kPreferences
    (or anywhere else)

I had checked Task Manager and Outlook wasn't running. But this morning I tried shutting down Outlook and deleting the folder and it worked.

I also found the source of the problem. Only a few folders were showing up in the new Archive folder (Deleted Items, Search Folders, and 4 of my own). I checked the properties for the latter 4 and saw that they each were trying to archive to the c: path instead of the d: path. Deleted Items and Search Folders were set properly, so I assume those two are created automatically. I have hundreds of folders and haven't checked the rest, but I tried archiving again and the problem seems to have gone away.

Do you have any individually configured auto-archive parameters for any folder? Right click the folder entry (such as Inbox, Contacts, etc.), select Properties | AutoArchive and make sure that the autoarchive folder is the one you want.

    Joe,

I think our entries crossed paths. That was exactly the problem. Thank you.
