    Find Duplicate Picture Files...

Within the My Pictures folder, I have several other folders, including /Digital Photos and /Wallpapers. Over time, the photos folder has grown to several thousand files while the wallpapers has several hundred files. I know that there are a lot of duplicates inside each folder. The file name is obviously different but the picture is the same.

I'm looking for a quick way to delete the duplicate pictures and wallpapers. Secondly, if there's a good way to search for duplicates across folders, that too, would be helpful. Note: They're all jpg files.

As an example: There could be three or four of the same jpg with different file names... So, something would have to recognize that these pics are identical except for file name.

I haven't tried either of these, so I don't know how effective they are. Both are shareware:

Time for some image managment software?

Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>

If your pics are terribly disorganized, maybe it's time to investigate using some management software. I've been using Thumbs Plus (http://www.cerious.com) for years and am quite happy with it (and the support provided by Cerious and others). If you have to solve a one time problem, just use the trial period to find your duplicates.

By the way, when searching for dupes, it enables you to adjust the degree of similarity of the image and them view them side by side. A terrific feature.

    Thank you

    I appreciate the responses.

    I've downloaded the ThumbsPlus offering and will give it a go this weekend. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

I use Dupe Checker Pro, from atory.com, which sells for $40. It is worth a trial run, if only to clean up what you already have for the trial period. If you expect to have a lot of duplicates to contend with over the long run, you may find it worth buying.

If you would be prepared to spend some money I recommend you to obtain JV16 Power Tools http://www.macecraft.com , which includes many other useful tools as well. There is a fully fledged 30-days trial version, and a Vista version is due out soon.
