    Outlook doesn't close (O2K, SR-1)

Friday afternoon I closed Outlook (and all other apps) in order to do my weekly backup which includes all my Outlook folders, address book, etc. When the backup was finished, it reported errors -- none of the Outlook-related files & folders were backed up, claiming Outlook was still running. A [ctrl][alt][delete] later and sure enough, despite having closed Outlook, Windows (98) was still showing it as running.

Why would Outlook still be running even after being closed? Can this be set to prevent this from happening again?

If you are running Winfax, this will keep Outlook running. I have a hell of a time trying find out why it was running on my wife's machine but not mine. The only difference was she was running Winfax and WordPerfect. Later I found out (here at the lounge) that Winfax id the guilty party.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No WinFax here. In fact, I've removed every fax capability I could find in either Windows or Office since this pc has no fax. Also, I'm set up on an intranet, with Outlook set up for Internet Mode Only, so there are no Exchange issues either.

During the normal course of a day, I run Outlook, Access, Excel, Client Access (multiple sessions), Monarch and for entertainment, WinAmp; quite often most if not all of these simulataneously. Top this up with anti-virus software, mouse driver, and desktop / miscellaneous utilities, and maybe the mix is a little too much for Outlook's shutdown to handle?

i'm not familar with Client Access and Monarch - do they access outlook contacts?

the cause is typically something accessing the outlook object model and not closing it correctly. palm sync software and winfax are the two most frequent causes but other programs can also.

Neither program directly interfaces with Outlook; in fact none of them do. Access generates some emailed reports, but the addresses are included in the macro commands, not accessed through contacts.

Client Access is the program used to connect to our pc's to an AS400, and Monarch is a report-mining program. I just listed all common programs, just in case there was some potential conflict or perhaps I am running the computer a little too hard and Outlook doesn't like such a chaotic environment.

Maybe another application sent a message and Outlook was opened invisibly in the background? You can run the following .vbs on the command line to shut down Outlook; note that DOS may resume processing before Windows has completed shutting down Outlook, so you might have to account for this in the sequence of commands.

    VBS:

    <pre>Sub CloseOutlook()
    Set appOL = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
    While Not appOL.ActiveInspector Is Nothing
'close any open messages, without saving changes
'to save, use 0; to prompt, use 2
    appOL.ActiveInspector.Close 1
    Wend
    While Not appOL.ActiveExplorer Is Nothing
'close all open explorer windows (will close app)
    appOL.ActiveExplorer.Close
    'appOL.ActiveExplorer.Session.Logoff might be better
'for Exchange users, but I haven't tested it
    Wend
    Set appOL = Nothing
    End Sub
    '----------------
    Call CloseOutlook
    '----------------</pre>

    Command for batch file:

    <pre>c:windowscommandCScript.exe c:windowscommandcloseol.vbs</pre>

(or wherever you saved it; use "" around the parameter if there are any spaces)

    Re: Outlook doesn't close (O2K, SR-1)

I just checked first thing this morning -- booted up, logged on to the network, opened Outlook, read mail (no replies or new messages), and closed Outlook. A few minutes later, I hit [ctrl][alt][delete] and there it was, staring right back at me -- Outlook was still running. I hit "End Task", waited, brought up the screen again, and Outlook was still there. So I did it again. Third time, Windows actually told me the app was busy or waiting or whatever, and I had to click the "Kill the bloody stupid program" button to get Outlook to finally close. Again, this was off of a clean boot, with no other programs started other than boot-ups. <img src=/S/dizzy.gif border=0 alt=dizzy width=15 height=15>

I'm hopelessly addicted to the little black X's and almost never use File | Exit for anything. Looking at the menu options, I have "Exit", but no option that allows an "Exit and Log Off".

Maybe it has something to do with the mode (?)

Reading your first post again - is this something that has just started happening?

    Re: Outlook doesn't close (O2K, SR-1)

I have noticed the backup errors previously, but hadn't given them much thought... since I may or may not have had Outlook open when I ran the backup. <img src=/S/doh.gif border=0 alt=doh width=15 height=15>

One of the programs, Effective Desktop (<A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.ministars.com>http://www.ministars.com</A>), does have some warning language that might prove a clue, but this program was in place for the previous backup which did not generate the "Open Outlook" errors.

    <hr>ExplorerX
ExplorerX subclasses the taskbar of the Windows explorer and may cause problems with other programs that want to do the same (the subclass chain problem). The symptom is that when you close the programs in wrong order, you will crash Windows explorer (probably when you shutdown your computer). There are currently no solution for this problem so if you find that you can't use ExplorerX together with your favorite software, you need to either disable ExplorerX or the other program.<hr>
This addresses an Explorer problem that has not been a significant problem so far. Also, the "chain problem" would not have been an issue this morning, since everything autoloaded, then Outlook was opened, then Outlook was closed, with no intervening events or programs.

exit and log off is corp only, to properly close the mapi subsystem. internet mode doesn't have as much mapi and doesn't need log off.

Nothing special, just the MSBACKUP.EXE (4.10.1397) that came with Windows, backing up to a 250MB Zip drive at maximum compression.

Thanks for this. One quick search and I found the perfect answer to the question I was going to ask "How can I shut down the outlook stub from the command line so that the PST file is closed and available for backup".
