    Create document map (Word 2003)

    Hello,

I have a long document and I am trying to build a simple outline of it. I want to to be comprised of all of the content marked as heading 1 and heading 2. This is to have a basic, bareboned map or outine of the document.

I thought that I could just build a table of contents off of the document based on styles with 2 levels and then copy and paste that table of contents into a new document. However, that is giving me problems because once somebody puts the cursor on the table of contents, the whole thing gets highlighted. Furthermore, if someone accidentally presses F9 while the cursor is in the TOC, it will disappear, since the document is made up of just the Table of Contents.

Is there another way to create a basic document map? Or if not, is there a way to take my table of contents and make it so that it looks the same, but without all of the table of contents characteristics? I am attaching a document. If anyone can make it into a regular outline, I would appreciate it.

Select the copied TOC in the new document and press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to "unlink" it, i.e. to convert it from an updateable field to just text. You'lll probably want to clean uo the formatting a bit, for example remove the hyperlink-style coloring by pressing Ctrl+Spacebar (while the TOC is still selected).

It might be even easier to Copy the TOC and then use Paste Special > Unformatted Text to place it in the target document.
