Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

As alternative to the now bloated and unwieldy Roxio and Nero burning programs, Ashampoo is worthy of consideration. I have personally tested this program on both Win XP and Vista (32-bit) and found it to be excellent. The only thing it lacks is a packet-writer which is necessary to format "RW" media; CD-RW or DVD -/+RW discs.

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

I will agree with your recommendation, Jeff. I mentioned in <post:=639,537>post 639,537</post:> that I initially got my first copy free, via a link like yours from Alan Miller at the time. Evidently this must be something they do periodically. After installing version 5 (free) I was later offered version 6 for $10 by way of an email. I took the offer. I recently got another offer to upgrade to version 7 for another $10 bucks, which I again jumped on. Mebbe they're gonna $10 me to death, but I too have run the program a number of times and am satisfied with it so far. I would add to your recommendation that if any Loungers take the freebie, they should install, register and WAIT. You might be also offered the version 7 for the same $10 bucks that I got, rather than the $20 deal mentioned.

As an aside, the only "complaint" I can think of is that I recently wanted to burn a series of CDs to carry in my car of music I have on my hard drive. I had enough songs selected that it would take at least five discs to get 'em all (CDA format). I think I was used to the Nero functioning that would fill up a disc and THEN ask for another blank, but Ashampoo wouldn't do that. I had to trim my list down to just the number of songs that would fit on a disc and then repeat the process for enough songs to fill up another disc. It was annoying, but worked OK.

Hi Jeff, from what you wrote does it mean that Ashampoo Burning Studio cannot handle rewritable CDs and DVDs at all? If so, this seems something of a surprising limitation.

    Thanks,

    Chris (Hunt)

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

No, not at all..... Ashampoo can read and write to RW media and yes, even erase them so they can be reused. What Ashampoo Burning Studio lacks is a PACKET-WRITER, which is necessary to FORMAT RW media. Formatting RW media changes the disc so that it acts like a floppy disk or USB drive..... i.e., you can simply drag & drop files to the disc, rename files/folders, create folders, delete individual files, etc. Win XP does not have a native packet-writer but Vista does. Nero has its "InCD" and Roxio I think still calls their packet-writing program, "Direct2Disc" or "DirectCD"?? Unfortunately, afaik neither company offers their packet-writing programs as standalone applications.

I hope that answers your question.

Thanks for the clarification. I was hoping I'd got the wrong end of the stick . I think I'll give the Ashampoo Studio a whirl.

    Cheers,

    Big Al,

Well, I actually just received one of those lucrative "Upgrade" offers from Ashampoo yesterday. Mine said I could upgrade to v. 7.1 for a mere $7.99. Well...... that's too good to pass up. However, when I clicked on the included link to get the upgrade, the price was $15.13 and not the $7.99 mentioned in the e-mail. Wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt that something went awry somewhere, I replied to them and asked why the discrepancy. I'm anxious to hear back from them about this. I'll keep you informed.

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

And just to keep the loop of this thread going... I wrote a support request to them to ask about burning MANY (CDA) songs in one pass and why the software won't "keep up with it" and do one disc after another. I'll have to wait and see IF I get a response or get ignored. It's VERY inconvenient to burn 5 or 6 CDs of music and have to make 5 or 6 separate passes at drag-n-drop of music files.

    Al,

The issue of the upgrade price for v. 7.01 has been resolved. I received a very nice e-mail from the company that explained that 1) they made a typo and it should have been $9.99, and 2) that price was in Euros not U.S. dollars. So, when I clicked the upgrade link again this morning, the price was $14.98 Cdn. Fair enough.. and lucrative enough for my interest to buy it. So far, for what I generally use a burning program for, it works 100%. And at 21+ megs, it is a joy to install compared to Nero's suite at c. 190 megs.

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

I don't know how you managed to contact them Jeff, for I've filled out contact forms in two different places on their web pages and get NO response. I just now tried for the third time. I'm trying to get an answer to my question of burning multiple CDA disks with one large drag-and-drop session rather than being forced to select the EXACT number of songs that will fit on a disk and repeating that process over and over again. Oh well, I may have to live with it if they don't listen.

I'm will to admit to a dumb-user (RTFM) problem so I've read and re-read the help screens but I don't see anything I've missed, so far.

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

    Al,

I sent both the online contact form and I sent an e-mail directly. I did notice on the online form that there was some mention that Tech Support doesn't receive requests either if the right category isn't selected or that they don't get them at all and you must contact them directly..... sorry, I can't remember which it was. As for your specific issue, since I have never burned an audio CD (I don't have enough downloaded music to fill 1/4 of a disc), I confess to being 100% ignorant on how to do that. What you want to do sounds reasonable enough but whether or not Ashampoo's program can do that is the question.... duh.

The direct e-mail address is: sis@ashampoo.com

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

Thank you sir. Their web pages certainly leave a lot to be desired in the area of support! I've filled out contact forms at both customer care and technical support and I did see that blurb about not getting a response. I thought to myself why the do they have this form if they're not gonna respond. The other, and I can't remember which was which, said they usually respond in 48 hours and that's been four days ago. I even made sure that I was logged in as a registered user. I guess I'll try your direct email address and see what happens. Meanwhile, I've been Googling for "how-to" or some kind of tutorial on the product, without success so far. One thing fer sure, I like Ashampoo better than I did Nero, so I guess I'll hang in...

Your suggested email address DID yield an email response a short time ago, but it came from kha@ashampoo.com:

Hi,

this feature is not supported by our software but we will check if we can integrate in in a newer Version.

    Kind regards

Re: Ashampoo Burning Studio 6.5 for FREE

    Al,

Well, glad to hear that you did get a response. I would have to guess that "kha@ashampoo.com" is Kay Hasbargen's return address, who is no doubt part of the Tech Support Team for Ashampoo.

And, from what I've read around the NET..... Ashampoo actually listens to user requests and does add, fix, customize, etc., features in their products. So, I wouldn't be totally surprised if this feature you asked about is added in some future update.

Oh yeah, it was "nice" to at least get a message that they'll consider it...
