Lost Desktop Tab in Display Properties (XP SP2)

    Dear Loungers,

I have just changed my desktop background picture - using right click on a picture and selecting the set to desktop background option when in File Explorer. Since then, and the same after a reboot, I a) cannot see the Desktop tab in Display Properties and the context menu, when used with a picture file no longer has the option to set the desktop background.

    Any suggestions, thank you.................... liz

Do you have the Themes tab? If so, can you select a standard one, and does this bring back the Desktop tab?
If so, can you then browse for the picture, use it and still retain the Desktop tab?

Try Desktop tab missing from Display from the Elder Geek.

See Kelly Theriot's Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP. Scroll down to #128. The link on the right hand side opens a .reg file that should restore the Desktop (and Screen Saver) tabs in Display Properties.

Re: Lost Desktop Tab in Display Properties (XP SP2

    Hans & Leif,

Have tried both your suggestions (and rebooted afterwards) and I still don't have the desktop tab.

I have looked at Group Policy but I don't have the item the Elder Geek specifies i.e. Turn on Classic Shell. In fact I have only one item in this group under the Standard tab it is: Turn off shell protocol protected mode, this is currently "not configured".

What else could I do? and any ideas why this might have happened?

    Hans,

I had checked Kelly's list previously - very useful resource - and had wondered if item 282. Enable the Appearance Tab - Display might have a hint, but I can't find a similar HKEY for Desktop so may be not. Or 285. Restore/Replace the Manage CLSID Default, but this is a bit scary so can you advise if this is a good idea, likely to help and have not irretrievable side effects?

Re: Lost Desktop Tab in Display Properties (XP SP2

I assume you meant #285 right hand side - 'Restore All Display Tabs', for the left hand side 'Restore/Replace the Manage CLSID Default' has nothing to do with this problem. In fact, the .reg file for 'Restore All Display Tabs' (# 285) is identical to the one for 'Restore Desktop and Screensaver Tabs' (#128), so if the latter didn't help, the former won't either.
By the way, did you restart your PC after running the .reg file?

    Hans,

yes always do reboot. I'm really stuck and although not a real problem it's just annoying that I can't change my picture other than to a standrad theme.

If Kelly's .reg file didn't help, I'm stumped. Either your Windows is damaged, or there is some kind of system policy or login script that overrides the registry changes.

    Hans,

thanks for tryng anyway. If windows is corrupt I would expect some other symptoms and I have none (yet) so I'll keep my fingers crossed and live with the "wrong" wallpaper!

Re: Lost Desktop Tab in Display Properties (XP SP2

I just happened upon this thread and have a question. In your original post it wasn't clear to me whether you did the deed from Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, since you called it "File Explorer." I don't have an answer (yet?) but I'm digging around at Kelly's for Internet Explorer setting "fixes" just in case. If the place where you set the wallpaper looked like my attachment, I'm wondering if the problem might lie in some obscure setting of IE...

Try this... open up an image in Paint and from the File menu choose Set As Background. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Have you tried a System Restore to a time before you changed the picture?

Re: Lost Desktop Tab in Display Properties (XP SP2

    Dear Loungers,

After trying everything suggested and nothing working I discovered what was needed and it was a bit of a combination so I tought I'd add it here so if anyone has a similar experience they can try this.

    I found this on Microsoft:

    1. Click Start, click Run, type Regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionPoliciesExplorer
    3. In the right pane, double-click ClassicShell, type 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
    4. Exit Registry Editor.

    And then did this:

    5. Click Start, click Run, type Gpedit, and then click OK.
    6. Goto Cmputer Configuration. Administrative Templates, Windows Components, Windows Explorer, Standard tab
    9. Double cClick Turn off shell protocol protected mode
    10. Select the disable radio button
    11. exit
    12. I rebooted after this

I don;t know why this works and why other solutions did not however I am just happy that all is well. It is worth saying that although te desktop tab is now visible when I am in File Explorer I do not get the context menu item (on right clicking a picture file) that allows me to set it as the desktop background. However it is possible to assign a new picture using the desktop tab so I don't mind.

Hope you don't suffer the same problem but if you do I hope this solves it for you.

    Happy lounging! liz
