    Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

I don't know whether a CD drive is a plug-and-play device, but you could try this and see whether it helps: in Device Manager, right-click the optical drives category (mine is named DVD/CD-ROM) and choose Scan for Hardware Changes. If nothing is found, there might be an actual problem with the drive (e.g., cables loose).

    CD-ROM Disappeared

I went to use my CD-ROM drive to install a CD and I cannot open the drive and light does not come on.

In Event Viewer on 5/24/07 Plug & Play Manager, Event:12. This message appeared: The device "Samsung CD-ROM SC-148C disappeared from the system without first being prepared for removal." I hope this helps you to help fix it.

I went to Device Manger and it has dropped off the list. I don't use it often so I don't know when it disappeared. It's a Samsing CD-ROM SC-148C. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2.

How do I get it back? it's very important that I get it running again soon.

    Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

Jscher, I've modified my post to show it as a plug-and play device. I Scanned for Hardware Changes and nothing came up. I pray I don't have to purchase another one, they seem to go bad about every 2 years. I don't go inside the computer, but I will get it done by someone who has a strap that grounds them and try and find if the cables are loose or not.

    Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

    Gloria,
I would also check in Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, to see if BOTH your Primary and Secondary channels are still active and intact. I don't know if your CD-ROM is on the primary as a slave or secondary as a master or slave drive. At least see if both are there.

AS to using a wrist grounding strap, I wouldn't worry much about that problem ( static ) in a modern system box. That static problem goes back to the days of germanium semiconductors that were VERY subject to static discharges. Today? If you just touch a metal part of your system enclosure or the metal case of the power supply, you will get rid of any buildup. I don't even do that but if it makes you feel better, do it.

    Re: CD-ROM Disappeared

Checked both controllers and both are working properly.

Just for kicks I clicked on DVD/CD-ROM drives again, and guess what I saw?

Samsung CD-ROM SC-148C. That little, green goblin has been at it again. My CD-ROM is back and working properly. The light came on and the drawer opened. This computer is trying to drive me crazy, and I'm almost there.

The Samsung CD-ROM has been discontinued, according to the Samsung website. The drivers are installed by Microsoft.
I wrote down the names of the drivers and clicked "Update Drivers" none were found and I chose to keep the ones I had.
For now, the problem is solved. I don't know for how long, but I'm not looking in the horses mouth.

Yes, I've crossed it off my to do list. I hope it doesn't disappear again. Now if that little, green thing will fix System Restore, I will give him a great big kiss, if I ever see him, that is.
