    TOC without captions (2002)

After creating a TOC in Word, the TOC has doc Headings 1-4 (good), but is also including all my table and figure captions (bad..). I double check each caption individually and verify that they are indeed style-type "caption". I check my settings for TOC creation, and I verify that indeed, only Headings 1-4 are to be listed and not the captions. Why is this happening, and how do I fix it? Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Welcome to Woody's Lounge!

Check the definition of your Capture style:
    - Activate the Styles and Formatting task pane.
    - Right-click the Capture style in the list and select Modify from the popup menu.
    - Select Format | Paragraph in the Modify Style dialog.
    - What is listed in the Outline level dropdown list? If it's not set to Body text, the Capture style may end up in the TOC.

Hans, thanks for post. However, the outline level at the place you direct me (for Caption-type style) does indeed already say body text. ANy other ideas? Thanks

Could you attach a small sample doc where this happens? You can replace the text with dummy text if necessary.

Select the entire TOC and press Shift-F9. If you want the TOC to include only Headings 1-4 then it should look like either of the following
{TOC o "1-4"} - this one relies on Outline Levels
    {TOC t "Heading 1,1,Heading 2,2,Heading 3,3,Heading 4,4"} - this one uses the styles specifically

If it doesn't contain code like either of these examples then edit it so it does and then select it and press F9 to rebuild the TOC.

Hans, see the Fig 4-1 reference in the attachment. I don't understand why this is included, since I only specify headings when building the TOC, not captions...

    Re: TOC without captions (2002)

Somehow, the paragraph with the caption has been set to outline level 1. It's not part of the style definition, so it must have been done manually.. To correct this:
    - Click anywhere in this paragraph.
    - Select Format | Paragraph...
    - Set the outline level to Body Text.
    - Click OK.
    - Click in the TOC,
    - Press F9 to update it.
    - Specify that you want to update the entire TOC.
The caption will disappear from the TOC.
