TOC for Outline Numbers (Word 2003)

I'm trying to create a TOC for a document with outline numbering. Catch is, I only want one or two words to show in the TOC. For example, if the item is "4.1 General. This procedure...," I would only want "4.1 General" to show up in the TOC. Any way to do that, short of splitting apart the text from the "header"? That would make the document really looooonnnnggggg!
    Thanks - - - Sher

    You can do the following:

    1) Create styles with the same formatting as Heading 1, but with Outline Level set to Body Text.
    2) When creating a heading, proceed as follows:
    - Set the style to the appropriate heading.
    - Type the one or two words you want to appear in the TOC.
    - Press Ctrl+Alt+Enter to insert a style separator.
    - Type the rest of the heading.
    - Set the paragraph style to the appropriate no-level style.
    3) Create the TOC based on Heading styles.

    See the attached sample document.

Note: if you have already created the headings, you may have to do some extra work, for a style separator is alway inserted at the end of a paragraph, so you'll have to move it.

A style separator! I've never heard of such a thing, but it works like a charm. Thank you! This will save me lots of agony, and time!

The style separator was introduced in Word 2002 (XP), so many users haven't heard about it.
