    Undeletable Files

I have Windows XP Pro set up on a machine with two internal hard drives (C,D) and one external USB hard drive (E). I use the E drive for backups. C and D are FAT32, E is NTFS.

Looking at it the other day, I noticed several folders with really long names that are likely hexadecimal: e.g. e0789fd1278bc90d123. Inside these folders there would be a ton of eula.rtf files and some other stuff. I can delete some of the files in them but a sub-folder (wcu) can't even be opened, and all attempts to get rid of these folders and files completely have failed. I did notice that when I brought home the SP2 redistributable file, that it seems to extract to the E drive, which seems odd. And it never successfully extracted anyway, it always died before it completed with a "File is Corrupt" message. I ultimately had to upgrade to SP2 via online updates.

Are these two things related, and is there any way to blow away these useless folders and files, short of having to move everything else off the E drive and reformatting it? I don't see how integral system folders could (or should) be residing on a removable external hard drive?

    Thanks,

    John

    Re: Undeletable Files

I run into a problem sometimes myself where I can't delete a file with a long name. Here's what I do to fix it.

Open a command line (Start>Run>cmd). Navigate to a folder above the one containing the long file name. Type rd /s and the name of the folder located directly below where you are. Exit command line and use Windows Explorer to delete any other directories or files as needed.

I hope this helps you out.

    John,
Try this <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> tool to get rid of those filesfolders.
I use it a lot and works fine.

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!
