What is pe.inf? (XP Pro SP2 and all updates)

I originally posted this in another forum and feedback there lead me to repost it here. Even so, I'm not sure if this is the proper place to post this.

In the past four weeks [I double-checked this using the search function in XP and all the dates are in May-June of this year] I've become aware of a lot of little files in all my folders - they are pe.inf. It's the same file in every folder. They are 2-10 kb in size.

I'm not aware of ever seeing this before. I did a web search and it didn't turn anything up.

They appear to be associated with folders that have image files.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who has an idea of what this is, where it comes from, and whether this is something of concern. If it is not anything to worry about, I'd sure like to know why I'm getting it and what I can do to keep it from happening.

    Thank you.

Have you looked at the file with a text editor to see what it contains? If you do, you could temporarily save that as a .TXT file and post it here for someone to look at. Maybe there's a clue in the contents.

Have you ever used BART? (BartPE - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

    Big Al,
    Thanks for the ideas.

I looked at the BartPE link at Wikipedia. Interesting. I've never used that software. I looked through my program files folder and could find nothing like it. I went to the BartPE website and saw that it is based on an idea from Microsoft. But I have not loaded any such software.

I have posted a sample of the pe.inf files that are saved as text files. Associated with the pe.inf files is a file called pe.cah.

Ah! Pe.inf and Pe.cah are associated with Ulead Photo Explorer. They form a picture cache or something like that.

Looks like Hans may be onto something. In spite of all the binary in your attachment, it seems to be rife with (something).JPG notations. What say you?...

All these image packages that have the different "libraries" will put "their" cach type files in folders that so the library can locate the different images. I have several packages and they ALL have done this.
