    Free Download A Day

Free Download A Day is an interesting repository of <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware. There's no need to "grab" the featured daily program, on the day. Offers don't expire - programs just accumulate in the archive for download at any time. I found the program descriptions to be refreshingly "light" and layperson-friendly.

    Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

I'm just *not* going to get any work done this morning ... too busy messing around with some of the software available here. Amazing site, thanks, Alan!

(Now I don't have to check giveawayoftheday.com every morning)

    Glad you like it!

I've just read that not all downloads are <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>ware, so a bit of prudent checking before download/ install might be worthwhile.

    Re: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

    Alan,

Thanks for the link. I'm curious as to how serious this particular offer might be. Not useful for you or me, but maybe other loungers can benefit from it.
<hr>What's the best rate you've seen for calls overseas? Fifty cents a minute? Twenty cents? How about free.
Yak4Ever is a free service that lets you call all over the place for nothing. Register your U. S. phone number and up to ten numbers you want to call, wait up to 24 hours for the telephone elves to set you up, and then you can start calling most anywhere. Their current list of countries includes much of Europe, Latin America, and a substantial chunk of Asia as well. The list of places they make available makes reference to "fixed [dialing] codes", so your mileage may vary if you include mobile numbers in your calling list. (Even in the "regular" telephone world calling rates to cell phones overseas are often higher than those to landlines.)
Yak4Ever uses your regular telephone, so there is none of the latency or cutting-out that you can experience with VOIP arrangements.
Yak4Ever promises that they'll never use your information for any nefarious purposes, and that your privacy is guaranteed.
Hey, you can't beat the price, so maybe you ought to give it a try.<hr>

    Diego,
    Interesting concept.

One point I don't see explained is that it says after you register and input 10 telephone numbers, then you dial an ACCESS NUMBER to make the calls.

    My question:
What IS the access number? Is it a toll free "800" type number or a number somewhere, where you rack up toll costs to get there or a "900" type number at xxx centsdollars per minute?

I don't see any details about that part of the deal.

    Re: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

I'd guess that the access number is a series of digits that you must dial in front of the main number. That code will then re-route the call to the Yak system. Without the code the call would be dealt with by your normal service provider.

I've not had direct experience of this thing but I know that this type of system did work here in the UK in the recent past. You had a phone line with your std provider but could sign up for cheaper (not free) long distance calls that were billed to a separate provider - providing you'd signed up and remembered to precede the number you were dialling with a few extra digits.

Wasn't there some system here in the UK whereby you got 'free' calls, but the call was interrupted every so often with adverts?
The call, in effect, was paid for by the advertising.

    <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15> dunno. Something like that would drive me <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>.

I think the system I was thinking of was some sort of precursor to TalkTalk but I may be completely wrong.

    Re: Aaaarrrrgggghhhh!

I have no experience with that one. The one I've been trialling is Free Call! I haven't signed up, but I have been fiddling with the free local calls in <img src=/S/flags/Australia.gif border=0 alt=Australia width=30 height=18>. I've been trying to figure how the connections are made. It can use just ordinary handsets, so I decided to fiddle with it. I pretended my number was that of my doctor's surgery, and I got that number to call my home phone as the destination. Sure enough, my phone rang and I heard the message that the surgery was unattended etc. I can also get my phone to ring my phone, if I want to hear the sound of my own phone's engaged signal. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

    Re: Free Download A Day

    Hi Alan,

    Good find - I think.

First, it might be worth knowing that the server for this seems to be in the Pacific time zone of the US. When I got onto the web site at 10:32 pm EDST, I was told that there was 4 hours, 28 minutes left to download the free download of the day.

Now with respect to that free download...

The DOD (Download of the Day or whatever else you think it means) was Prevx V2. Being a Prevx user, I decided to investigate and downloaded the SW. The readme said to use one of 10 keys to activate the SW. If one didn't work, try another since each key was only good for a certain number of activations. So if all keys had maxed out, you're out of luck.

The DOD also said this was Prevx V2. Checking to see what version I had, I saw the readme of my previously downloaded SW said it applied to Prevx Home V2 or Prevx Pro V1 and was dated January 2005. So the question now is what version of Prevx is being offered by DOD? Is it Home, in which case this is nothing useful? Or is it Pro, in which case this seems like a good deal (if you can find an activation key to use)?

Whichever version it is, it only comes with a 12-month license. I decided not to install it.

    Re: Free Download A Day

    Fred,

I think you're confusing with the site giveawayoftheday.com. I also saw Prevx V2 there, but decided it wasn't so much a "giveaway" as a crippled/time-limited "tempter". I didn't bother with it either.
