Windows Installer Error - Adober Reader 8 (XP Home SP2)

I posted this problem yesterday to the Software forum but now I suspect this is more a Windows problem.

When I try to install Adobe Reader v8.1 on my notebook, Windows Installer tells me "The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation". I have no problem on my desktop computer with the same setup. I am the one and only user on this machine.

Looking at the Event Viewer, I see the following error:

The installation of COCUME~1CHRISG~1LOCALS~1TempAdobe Reader 8AcroRead.msi is not permitted by software restriction policy. The Windows Installer only allows execution of unrestricted items. The authorization level returned by software restriction policy was 0x0 (status return 0x800b010c).

This latter site seems to be unable to help...

I had no problem previously installer v8.0, but now I can't even install that - same problem. I tried cleaning all Adobe Acrobat/Reader-related items from the Registry with no success.

Can anyone assist me with correcting this?

I guess the first thing I would check is your Security Settings, particularly if you are using IE7.

No, I'm not using IE7. Primarily Firefox, with IE6 still installed.

Assume your reference to Security Settings in the Internet Properties (Security tab? Can't see anything there which might imact.

Not clear what the connection might be; I've had not difficulty downloading the install file, just Windows Installer won't let me install it...

I have been looking at the Digital Signatures tab in the file properties for the installer file. On my desktop, this shows 'This digital signature is OK', while on the notebook, it shows 'A certificate was explicitly revoked by its issuer'. This seems to be connected with Verisign.

The files on both machines are exactly the same, so it has to be some difference in settings on the computers, probably in Registry. I searched for 'Verisign' in the Registries of both units. The notebook had a key 'HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftInternet Account Manager' which does not exist on the desktop. I copied this and then deleted it, but this had no impact.

Note: both have a key at HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftInternet Account ManagerPreconfigured' with the same data on both machines.

I am not sure if I am any further forward. Anyone know anything about the Digital Signatures? How can I get them unrevoked?

OK, sorry, solved!

Went to Internet Properties - Content, Certificates. Found Adobe certificates in the Other People tab and the Untrusted Publsihers tab on the notebook, not on the desktop. So removed both. Now I can install!

What a pain!. Lord knows how those entries got there!

Funny thing is, Properties - Digital Signatures - Digital Signature Details on the notebook still shows that the certificate is no valid for the requested usage, while on the desktop computer, it shows acceptable. I wish I understood computers!

Does anyone know a good source of clear, simple information on Digital Signatures?

There is a Microsoft library article regarding digital signatures and a link to a step by step guide to installing them at, SIGNATURES

Also if you google the "understanding digital signatures", you will see a lot of hits.
