Vista & Win98 Network (Microsoft Windows 98 Second

I am contemplating putting together a new machine with Vista as the OS. One stumbling block is the apparent lack of drivers for 'legacy' printers and scanners for Vista.

I have a question. Is it possible that I could 'retire' my Win98 SE2 machine (a Dell OptiPelx GX200) and put it to 'pasture' to serve as a printer/scanner server and to network it with a new machine whose OS is Vista? Wouldn't that overcome the driver problem. The Win98 machine works fine with my HP LaserJet 4L and DeskJet 882C printers and Epson Perfection 636U and HP Photosmart C5100C (SCSI) scanners. A potential 'benefit' would be the networking of my wife's XP laptop for printing as well. Can anyone see downsides?

Can it be possible that this solution might work?

    thanks,

You will still require Vista drivers for these products on the Vista machine. Vista has built-in drivers for both the LaserJet 4L and the Deskjet 882C, but I can't find anything for either of the scanners. Having the drivers on the Win98 machine does NOT mean that the Vista machine can use these same drivers.

See Free Vista Drivers - RadarSync for an Epson driver and this Free Vista Drivers - RadarSync for an HP driver. HP Product search results can NOT find c5100c, are you sure that is the correct model? Be careful with the Epson driver as the source is not Epson.

Your Epson Perfection-636U is compatible with Windows 98, iMac, and the new PowerMac G3. Windows 3.1/95 and NT are not supported. Evidently, this model is quite old since XP isn't even included nor are there any updated drivers for XP either, never mind Vista. Methinks it's time to upgrade. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
