Additional 'Program Files' Folder (Vista Home Premium)

I just tried to "install" a simple program that just needed to be unzipped into its folder in the Program File folder. After the unzipping was completed I looked in C:Program Files and the files were not there so I did a search and found them at the following location:

    C:Users [me]AppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files...

What is going on here? Why is there another Program Files folder? This one also contains a few files for several other programs that I have installed on this new computer. Those other programs seem to be correctly installed in the correct location so I don't know why a few of their files are also stored in this 2nd location. I can understand that there may be a personal place for my application data and the AppData folder name implies that use but I don't understand why there is a 2nd Program Files. Does anyone know?

    Thanks,
    Bill

Have a look at this article . The whole article is interesting, but for your particular question, scroll down to the "File System and Registry Virtualization" section.

John, that's an excellent article. Parts II and III are now also available.

Paul - do you have links to the next two articles? Thanks.

    John,

Thanks for the link. That article is very interesting and useful. It not only explains what happened to my files, it also cleared up my puzzle about how I could have selected the wrong Program Files folder in WinZip. I'll go look for those other articles too.

    John,

I just found a page here (http://www.ni.com/vista) that lists a number of their resources on Windows Vista, including all three white papers. A very interesting web site.

Thanks Bill. It is a good resource isn't it?
