# Thread: Chocs Away!

1. ## Chocs Away!

Jezza will like this.

Assume you have a chocolate bar consisting, as usual, of a number of squares arranged in a rectangular pattern. Your task is to split the bar into small squares (always breaking along the lines between the squares) with a minimum number of breaks. How many will it take?

2. ## Re: Chocs Away!

What are the rules? Should each intermediate part be broken individually, or am I allowed to realign parts and break them in one go? See the illustration below. The first break for a 2x2 chocolate bar is obvious. I then have two 2x1 bars. If I have to break them individually, the total number of breaks is 1 + 2 = 3. But if I align the two parts, I can easily break both of them at once (I often do it that way), so the number of breaks would be 1 + 1 = 2.

Once broken, pieces may not be realigned but separated individually.

My Guess ( well sort of as there is some Jezza Logic in this) is:

Help yourself to as many pieces of the [choccy bar] as your heart desires.

In that case I agree with Jerry.

<img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>...I have surprised myself <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

My theory was:

<span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold"> If the number of squares =X then

<table border=1><td> <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">X</span hide> </td><td> <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">Cuts</span hide> </td><td> <span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">2</span hide> </td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">1</span hide></td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">3</span hide></td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">2</span hide></td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">4</span hide></td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">3</span hide></td><td>...</td><td>...</td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">X</span hide></td><td><span style="background-color: #FFFF00; color: #FFFF00; font-weight: bold">X-1</span hide></td></table>
</span hide>

In that case, help yourself to some of these.

9. ## Re: Chocs Away!

Impeccable logic, Sherlock!
