    Portable freeware

This is a subject I have become interested in because I am not allowed to install any "helper" applications on my work PC. I also recently brought a U3 Flash drive for this purpose but have heard there are some problems with the U3 concept.

I would like to see every app come in a portable version, if not make the portable version the only one. Then maybe we could get away from the problems caused by the awful Windows Registry model.

I have only tried one program here (JKDefrag) which I have been using for some time. It works very well and I have not had any problems. if anyone notices any standouts in the 20 pages of apps on this site, please post back.

You might be interested in <post:=624,017>post 624,017</post:>. I have found portable Thunderbird ideal for storing archived e-mails, complete with the fully functional reader and mailer, on a USB stick. I've used it for Outlook and OE, but I think it can import from other programs.

From the same place that Alan got portable Thunderbird, PortableApps.com offers free applications for USB drives. Most of the software is from the open source community, and you can choose a suite containing many useful applications or go for the individual applications instead.
