    Internet Files (IE 6)

Hello, This is a general question in regards to files being downloaded onto the harddrive. When I go online I know that all kind of files are being downloaded to my computer. I always empty the Temporary Internet files which also deletes the cookies. Isn't there another place though where files are being put on the computer that may/should not be there. Someone told me that, don't know if it's true. If so, where are they and can they (files) be deleted and how? I have Norton Anti Virus which scans for viruses but don't know if it does anything else, other than protect my computer. Any help on how to really "clean" my computer from all kinds of files that don't belong on my computer would be appreciated. Same when looking at videos i.e. YouTube. Thank you for your help. Tira

Only if you specifically download files and save them. Generally speaking as long as you are not visiting dangerous sites (such as porn & some warez sites) the files that are in TIF are harmless. If you have a broadband connection limiting the size of the TIF to about 50 MB should be sufficient.

See CCleaner.com for an example of a <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> program to help remove files from your PC. A word of warning - be careful with this and similar products. Some are such as ccleaner can be pretty aggressive about what is deleted. It is easy to delete more than you should.

I agree that there's nothing dangerous or harmful about temporary files on your computer such as the internet browser cache. It will be emptied continuously by the browser. You can also use the built-in Disk Cleanup (Start, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Cleanup) to empty these files, the recycle bin and/or a few other things. It's safe to do as far as I know.

Thanks Joe and Al for your input. Is there a place where once can check places that have been visited on the web other than the TempIntFolder? Just wondering as I have heard many times it leaves traces on a computer. It's not that important just trying to learn a bit more about how things work in the "background". Thanks, Tira
