Partition alignment can enhance the performance of mechanical hard drives; now some sites are recommending the technique for solid-state drives.
I disagree, and here’s why — along with an explanation of partition alignment and how to align any drive, mechanical or SSD.
Do SSDs benefit from partition alignment?
Writing from Toronto, reader Harvey Houghton raised an interesting topic that affects not just solid-state drives (SSDs) but all disk drives.
“Increasingly, laptop and desktop computers are using SSDs. While it’s fairly common knowledge that such drives should not be defragmented, it’s essential to make sure that their partitions are correctly aligned.
“Here is the only article that I have been able to find concerning this: Lifehacker’s how-to piece, ‘Speed up your SSD by correctly aligning your partitions.’
“I believe that it would be incredibly useful if Fred looked at this matter. I know that many of my friends and colleagues are confused since they have acquired SSDs on their computers.”
