A good way to see PC content when far from home?

With remote-access app LogMeIn now available only by paid subscription, Lounge member Ballpoint is considering the virtues of TeamViewer.

So he asked his fellow Loungers in the Other Applications forum to enlarge his understanding of how the program works and whether it has the features he admires in LogMeIn — or are there better choices for a remote-access app? Of possible interest to many, remote-access security from public networks becomes part of the lively conversation.
