    Color splotches on CRT monitor

I six-year-old grandson amused himself recently by touching his mom's CRT monitor screen with a mechanic's telescoping magnet. Touching the screen created some interesting color patterns. Now those color splotches won't go away. Does my daughter now own a 17-in piece of junk?

Some monitors have a degauss button, whcih will clear this kind of problem. It's worth looking in the user guide, if you have one.

If the monitor doesn't have a degauss button then look here or here for some other suggestions.

The degauss function is often found hiding sneakily in the OSD (On-Screen Display) menu of the monitor. Exploring this/these menus can be an exercise in frustration, as you realise that the designer has not been forced actually to use what s/he has created, and to experience their non-intuitivity...

The idea of putting a magnet at the end of a drill bit and rotating it rapidly just in front of something made of glass would probably cause Health and Safety to have kittens!
