I have concluded that it is no longer practical (and probably hasn't been for at least a year or so) to be on dial-up if you're running Windows. The sizes of Windows, Office, and other program updates, and the attachments which accompany emails, means that you might need to be online for an average of perhaps an hour per day simply to keep up-to-date with Windows, software firewall and AV, to mention no others. If you're in the situation of having to pick and choose which updates you ought to apply, simply because of their download time, then you are in Knopfler-mode (viz. Dire Straits <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>). Sorry!

There's a Chinese community support group that I do some work for, and they are in the same boat as you - I've told the lady in charge that about the only way she is going to be able to read emails sent to the group is by using webmail at home (where she has broadband). I haven't even bothered to calculate just how long it would take to download one single email with a 7 MB attachment at a maximum download speed of 44 kbps, just one of those which were stacked up, waiting...

Mission: identify what we do best and find more ways of doing less of it better
