On a Dell Latitude E550 I was reinstalling XP SP3 after a virus issue. I used Easy Transfer Wizard to back up files and settings for better control than XP Files and Settings Transfer. I installed Easy Transfer to restore the files. When I ran it, it assumed I wanted to backup the files and gave me the "File exists" message. I was tired and gave it the go ahead, realized what just happened and cancelled while Easy Transfer was calculating space. However, the damage was already done. In the backup file's place was a .tmp file of 0 length.

Any suggestions on recovering the data? It is on an external harddrive. I've been trying several free undelete utilities but no joy.

If utilities such as Recuva are not able to retrieve the file, I fear you're out of luck.
