Every so often I start up my Win 7 Ultimate PC and all of the desktop icons are missing. It's a small matter to right click the desktop, select View and then Show Desktop Icons, but I'd like to know why this happens in the first place and figure out how to stop it.

Go to "Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Personalization", select "Change Desktop Icons".
Ensure the ones you want are selected with a check mark, if they're not place a check in box of the ones you want.
    See if this works.

Do you have any other icons on the desktop, like a folder that was changed to an icon that won't show up?
Invest a little time and energy in a well thought out BACKUP regimen and you will have minimal down time, and headache.

Build your own system; get everything you want and nothing you don't.
