So I was told that Firebird is a great alternative to Outlook. Will my contacts, inbox, outbox, etc transfer easily with this? Has anyone else had experience using this program? I would like input before I switch.

I think Firebird is a database, not an email client. Maybe lynndelap meant Thunderbird?

Probably means Mozilla Thunderbird from the creators of Firefox. Not too familiar with it but it does have an import feature that imports from Outlook.

I have used Thunderbird (download from Mozilla.org) for years at home and Outlook at the office.
    I much prefer Thunderbird.
I would suggest the Lightning and Thunder Browse add-ons (and any others that you might find interesting to try).

    Cheers
