    Windows Search and Outlook

    I am running Windows 7 64-bit with Outlook 2010 also 64-bit.

The situation is that I am unable to get Windows Search to function properly with Outlook. If Windows Search is running when I start Outlook receive the following message "Windows Installer Preparing to install" which after some delay is replaced by "Microsoft Outlook: Cannot start Microsoft Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window."

Any atempt to launch the Outlook 2010 installation DVD results in the system message "Setup: Setup has stopped working... A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available... Close Program"

Nothing above changes if I stop the Windows Search Service. However, if I stop AND disable the Windows Search Service, Outlook runs as expected, as does the Outlook installation process. But then I still have the situation described above.

If I disable the Windows Search Service, start Outlook, then restart the Windows Search Service, both run. However the Outlook does not get indexed and any attempt to modify the Control Panel Indexing Options results to the following system message "Microsoft Office Outlook: Either there is no default mail client or the surrent mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set is as the default mail client." Outlook IS the default mail client.

I seem to be going in circles. Can anyone help?

This could be a compatability issue with Office 10 64 bit. If you have access to Office 10 32 bit, uninstall the 64 bit version and try the 32 bit. Otherwise, you could try disabling Windows Search from looking at Outlook files. If you don't have a need to search within files, I would use Everything Search instead of Windows Search.
