    Security Settings (starting from scratch) (IE 5)

    I have just reformatted my system and installed Office XP and IE 5 on it. Now I am trying to plug all the security holes. I want to make sure that I get them all (or at least all the known ones).

    The difficulty I'm facing is that I don't know of a web site that has all these various security issues compiled into a neat set of procedures to secure a system. I'm not concerned with a lot of obscure variations - I just have Office and IE.

    I can go to the Office Update site and the Windows Update site and download the various updates there. But I know there are changes I should make to the security settings in Outlook and IE and I'm not sure what those changes are. Moreover I'm not sure if the two Microsoft update sites mentioned above contain even all of Microsoft's security patches. I also have a number of different notes sent out that detail various security patches. But it's getting hard to keep track of which updates are still valid, etc.

    Can anyone recommend a site that would clearly deliniate the steps involved in taking a straight-forward system with IE and Office and securing it? Does such a website exist that is regularly updated?

    Re: Security Settings (starting from scratch) (IE 5)

    Here is a good place to start: <A target="_blank" HREF=>The Internet Explorer Tweak Guide</A>. That is for IE5.

    Then, for more items related specifically to IE Security Settings, this 6-part article is hard to beat:

    <A target="_blank" HREF=>Part 1</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=>Part 2</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=>Part 3</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=>Part 4</A>
    <A target="_blank" HREF=>Part 5</A>

    Part 6 is more of interest to system administrators and can be found by links in the other articles.

    In case you decide to upgrade to IE6, the IE6 Tweak Guide is <A target="_blank" HREF=>here</A>.

    Re: Security Settings (starting from scratch) (IE 5) addition, would not the security patches offered by the Windows Critical Updates Package be of any use? When first installed it downloads any patches you don't already have, and informs you when others become available.
