Word XP lock up with Numbering

Why does is lock up so much? I have been trying to use numbering in a table and each time I click on the number format, my document freezes. Also, when I bold one cell in the table, all cells are bolded. I have to click on undo in order for it to be the correct way.

Issue 2 (bolding) Look at Format => Styles => Modify (button)
If the checkbox for "update" is checked, uncheck it.

Issue 1 - I don't think you want to be clicking on number format (ever!) Automatic numbering in Word should only be applied through styles. You may even want to remove the numbering and bullets buttons from your toolbars! These work OK for very simple lists in documents; they shouldn't be used in templates. Almost certainly, your table is not a "simple" list.
