    Hardware driver incompatibilities

Can anyone suggest fixes for a couple of hardware driver problems that have arisen upgrading a 21 month old PC from Win 98 to XP?

    1. Almost every time I shut down XP I get a message to the effect that explorer.exe is ending and then is no longer responding. XP then appears to shut down quite normally. Microsoft told me I may need to update my bios firmware. I tried this several times with file km1009.bin (bios update for ASUS K7M Slot A motherboard), but get the message "bios file not of proper size". I have made sure that the new bios file is no longer marked as an archive under properties.

    2. My Diamond SupraSST Pro DF modem no longer worked with the soft driver chosen by XP. I therefore tried to install the beta version of a V92 driver for this modem specified as XP-compatible by Diamond. However, using "have disk" and pointing to the folder with the driver files just results in the driver installation routine going round in a loop without ever installing the driver. I've also tried the appropriate V90 (Win 2000) driver with exactly the same result. Needless to say it looks as though a true Win XP driver will not be available for a month of Sundays! Any suggestions about a fix - or can anyone suggest a new internal modem available at reasonable cost complete with XP driver that actually works?

Would be very grateful indeed for any help, especially with the modem. It seems to be a common problem under XP.

In case anyone else is having the same problem, I finally got a beta update (km132.rom) from Asus which fixed the bios problem. Only thing to remember now is that you have to hold the power button depressed for a few seconds to get the computer to finally switch off (one of Asus motherboards peculiarities under XP?).

This has been around for some time. This is to help prevent the "Bumping" of the switch and the machine is turned off in error. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks a lot Dave, I had yet to catch up with this change.
