Housekeeping tips for common Web browsers

Housekeeping tips for common Web browsers

    By Michael Lasky

Browser developers might squabble over whose product is the most popular or most secure, but these days any browser we use is our most-used application.
Staying secure on the Net requires not only keeping browsers up to date but also regular housecleaning of caches, plugins, and some troublesome apps.

CCleaner when set up correctly, does a good job of cleaning up browsers. Geek Uninstaller ( site ) has completely removed all traces of Ask Toolbar from my browsers, with the exception of resetting the Home Pages and Search Engines from within the browsers, as instructed in the article. Registry values associated with toolbars can act as reinstall beacons, so these could be removed for better safety. That's one of several advantages to using Geek Uninstaller for PUPs instead of a simple Windows Uninstall. Unlike Revo Uninstaller, Geek Uninstaller does 64-bit and forced uninstalls for free.

There are browser extensions and settings for Firefox and chrome which do the cleanup process in one click from within the browser, or automatically when the browser closes. Click&Clean is available for Chrome and Firefox, and can be set to do most of the job. Firefox further can be set to allow total cleanup in one or two clicks from the History drop-down.

The manual steps listed in the article may still be needed from time to time, but the cleanup tools I use can make the job much easier for everyday use.
