    Kb2952664

All yesterdays Windows Updates installed successfully except for KB2952664. However, I understand that KB2952664 was only issued as an aid to Users upgrading from Win 7 to Win 8, and if I am correct on this then I will ignore that update as I have already upgraded to Win 8.1.

I would appreciate confirmation that my understanding is correct.

I've just installed my Windows Updates (always get them late) and it initially reported all were successful after the reboot and then got a pop-up to say that it couldn't install all security updates.

Checked update history and it was the same for me, that one was showing as Failed - did a manual check for updates and it came back I was up to date, so don't know what happened to it.

That update installed successfully on my win 7 Pro x64 on 5/22/14. It's not a critical update just recommended.

Same error code to me on a Win7 Home x64 System. Install without errors on a Win7 Pro x32 System.

Just take a closer look to the update on the Windows 7 Professional system.
There where no Popups after restart and no pending updates.
Looks like this is because the Kb2952664 is only optional.
The update history shows error code 80242016. The update was NOT installed.

KB2949927 was installed sucessfully on x32 Win 7 Professional with Service Pack 1.

KB2949927 was NOT installed on x64 Win 7 Home . Error Code

So that's what I got so far:

KB2952664 (optional) : Win 7 Home x64 NOT OK Error Code 80242016, Win 7 Prof x32 NOT OK Error Code 80242016
    KB2949927 (important) : Win 7 Home x64 NOT OK Error Code 80004005 , Win 7 Prof x32 OK

KB2949927, KB2952664 have both installed successfully on my Win 7 Pro x64 and x86 computers. KB2952664 on 5/22/14 and KB2949927 on 10/14/14 so I assume that something is different about those updates that go to other country's for some reason since all the posters are from country's other than the US. The exception is Sudo 15 as I don't see a location listed.

This patch is only to improve the upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1. You are getting the patch on a Windows 7 partition. If you never intend to upgrade that version of the OS to Windows 8.1 you may safely hide the patch. Your Windows 8.1 partition has nothing to do with this.

Interesting article about this update by Woody Leonard here:

Windows 7 patch KB 2952664 fails with error 80242016
Microsoft sends KB 2952664 through the automatic update chute for the seventh time -- and still can't get it right

What are the consequences of not being able to install KB2949927?

Windows 7 patch KB 2952664 fails with error 80242016
Back in April, I speculated that KB 2952664 was a patch for Win7 to make it easier to perform in-place upgrades to Windows 8.1. Now it's starting to look like the patch may also ease the transition to Windows 10. Heaven only knows, your speculation is as good as mine.

... if you intend to do an in-place upgrade from Windows 7 ... Wait until ... you're ready to make the leap, patch Win7 with the then-current version of KB 2952664.
