    Word Conversion problem

I am on Windows 7 and I recovered some Word 2007 files ( .doc format) with Mini Tool Powr Data Recovery as I have in the past without a problem.
This time, however, I am unable to open the recovered files. To begin with, they show in blue ( compressed) in Windows Explorer, under a Recycle Bin folder(?). I have uncompressed the file by unchecking the compressing option in Properties, but I get a Conversion prompt showing the encoding as Windows Default with the text in unlegible characters. None of the other conversion options works. Can anybody help please?

I was going to suggest Libre and/or Open Office, however, I reRead and realized the problem could be byte-level.
