    PortableApps tour: Software offered in bulk

    Most of the applications we use require some sort of installation process that firmly bonds them to one machine.

    But that formal install isn't a Windows requirement. Portable applications, as their name implies, can run without being set up on a specific machine. They're sort of click and go from whatever drive they're residing on, including flash drives.

    I just installed on a USB drive for my Windows 7 computer.
    It is a clever idea, although none of the portable utilities I currently have on that USB drive are on their list of 500 (which is largely games).

    I was disappointed that did not start automatically when I insert the USB drive. I have to go to Windows Explorer and select their correct .exe file. The instructions implied that it would start automatically.
