# Thread: need a formula (win98)

1. ## need a formula (win98)

I am Trying to set up a spread sheet for a new small business. We grow Mushrooms. I need a formula to tell me how much was picked off each bag (ex.. 4lb. 4 1/2oz.) Daily totals and bag totals.
thanks for any help!

Hi

Can you be just a little bit more specific as to how your business is set up? I'm afraid I don't fully understand, at this stage, how you wish Excel to be able to save you lots of time and trouble.

3. ## Re: need a formula (win98)

We have hanging bags of mushrooms. 15 in each room. When we pick the mushrooms we put them in separate containers to be wieghed. We need to keep track of each bag separatly. We also need to know the daily wieght picked from all the bags. I have been doing this long hand but I would like the excel program to add all this up. We keep the wieght to the eighth of an ounce. (ex. 4lb. 5 7/8 oz.)
I Hope this helps you.

There seems to be a problem, and it is nothing you are doing wrong. Please bear with us and we will try to have the problem rectified.

Sorry Unka, not working.

I uploaded a file myself but cannot access it. Seems like a glitch so we will have to ask for your patience until a fix is found.

still not working.

No sweat. Just goes to show how much of a rarity such a problem is!

9. ## Re: need a formula (win98)

For the record, the numbers of the Bags were in Row 2 and the formulas I used (for Bag 2) were:

Totals: CONCATENATE(INT(SUM(D326)/16))&" - "&TEXT(MOD(SUM(D326),16),"# ?/8")
Averages: CONCATENATE(INT(SUM(D326)/COUNT(D326)/16)&" - "&TEXT(MOD(SUM(D326)/COUNT(D326),16),"# ?/8"))

You may wish to wait and work off an actual spreadsheet. (BTW if you do want to be able to switch between 1/2s, 1/4s and 1/8s - for your totals and averages - all you need to do is change the 8 at the very end of each formula to a ?. It will result, however, in some of your averages turning out to be 1/3s!)

As you may know, you can use the 1/8 format in Excel. I attach a sample workbook which you may want to use as a template. I chose the Fraction format "as eighths" (in case you're going to use averages). You may prefer to change it to: "up to one digit" (which lets you switch between 1/4s and 1/8s).

As you say, the more interesting problem is delivering the results in pounds and ounces. It is proabably going to be simpler to manage things by entering your individual "picks" in ounces and only have the totals (and averages) in pounds and ounces. As you may know, when you enter the weights of your picks - say 15 7/8 - you will need to enter +15+7/8. You will see that the spreadsheet will show 15 7/8, but the formula bar at the top will show the decimal equivalent. The formulas at the bottom are a bit involved to explain. I believe they do give the correct results. You may wish simply to copy them over to where you next wish to use them.

If you have any questions about expanding the figures, please post back.

Unka:

Your spreadsheet did not get uploaded properly to the server. I have deleted the reference (it is causing server errors). Can you edit this post and re-upload the mushroom.xls file.

Sorry for the problems.

12. ## Re: need a formula (win98)

It is working now! Sorry, I was fast asleep once Ian had sorted out the problem!

13. ## Re: need a formula (win98)

Here is again. If this works, I think I'll be able to tell Andrew what went wrong.
