    That update seems to do the trick. On restarting, Outlook immediately started indexing and search is now getting results. (It's far from done -- the number of items to index is still rising.)

    I'll post an update when everything is done.

    UPDATE: Indexing has finished and Outlook now seems to have full search capacity back again. Many thanks to both f you for helping. I will close this now.
