    Introducing StdSettingsForm

    Hey Y'all,

    I've been continuing my assault on PowerShell and here's my latest. This program will read a select group of Windows Settings from the Registry and Services and then present them in a categorized tabbed menu and allow you to change the settings! Just make all the changes you want then click the Execute button.

    I know this is not an exhaustive list and isn't meant to be but rather a list of commonly changed items. You know all those things that you have separate .reg files to turn on and off.

    I've tested this on Win 10 Creators Pro and Home and Win 7 HP. I've managed to hide the two settings that don't work in Win 7 if run on a Win 7 machine. Still working on closing the space for the one item, luckily the other item was the last in the list so you don't see a gap.

    All comments are welcome and you can vote for your favorite item to be added. I'm already planning on a tab to deal with One-Drive settings. I'll also be providing full comment based help files in a later version.

    FYI: You must run Powershell as Administrator for this program as some of the registry access requires it. If you don't you'll get a nasty RED error messages!

    I'd appreciate it if anyone with Win 8.x could test.

    P.S. Make sure you have at least a Restore Point if not an entire Image backup since you are testing at your own risk!

    Screen Shots:

    BTW: The Execute button does not appear until you change a setting. Also if you reverse your selections when there are no longer any changes to make the Execute button will disappear. Also the Exit button changes to Red while there are pending changes!

    Here's the Zip File: StdSettingsForm V01-00.zip

    Hey Y'all,

    I just answered in another thread how to create a restore point from PowerShell. Looks like a feature for this program in the next version.

    May the Forces of good computing be with you!

    Hi RG. I've been using AutoHotkey to do a similar job of autoconfiguring Win 10.

    The following shows the registry settings that I've discovered/amend:

    Code:
    ; version date: March 04, 2017
    ; Tested on Windows 10 1511 (November Update), Windows 10 1607 (Anniversary Update)
    ; Tested on Windows 10 Home, Windows 10 Pro
    ; Tested on Windows 10 x64, Windows 10 x32

    ; Prompt to 'Run as Admin', i.e. show UAC dialog
    If Not A_IsAdmin
    {
       Run *RunAs "%A_ScriptFullPath%"  ; Requires v1.0.92.01+
       ExitApp
    }

    ; Allow registry commands in a 32-bit script to access redirected keys in the 64-bit registry view and vice versa.
    ; Thanks to qwerty12 (see https://autohotkey.com/boards/viewto...102632#p102632)

    Rick,

    Thanks, there are a few settings there I'll probably add. That's one long list of settings!

    Put File Explorer back in the Start menu:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    ; Start - Show File Explorer - Turn ON (Creators Update, version 1703)

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache\DefaultAccount\$$windows.data.unifiedtile.startglobalproperties\Current]
    "Data"=hex(03):02,00,00,00,97,e6,93,83,c6,c5,d2,01,00,00,00,00,43,42,01,00,\
      cb,32,0a,02,05,86,91,cc,93,05,24,aa,a3,01,44,c3,84,01,66,9f,f7,9d,b1,87,cb,d1,\
      ac,d4,01,00,05,bc,c9,a8,a4,01,24,8c,ac,03,44,89,85,01,66,a0,81,ba,cb,bd,d7,\
      a8,a4,82,01,00,c2,3c,01,00
    You need to sign out/sign in or restart for change to take effect. Alternatively, just restart Explorer either from Task Manager or use the following in a BAT file:

    Code:
    TASKKILL /F /IM explorer.exe
    start explorer.exe
    Hope this helps...

    EDIT: Well, this is weird. If I write the registry amendment using AutoHotkey the change is dynamic, i.e. no need to restart Explorer.

    Code:
    ; Choose which folders appear on Start - File Explorer (Turn ON - Creators Update, version 1703)
    RegWrite, REG_BINARY, HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\CloudStore\Store\Cache\DefaultAccount\$$windows.data.unifiedtile.startglobalproperties\Current, Data, 0200000097e69383c6c5d2010000000043420100cb320a02058691cc930524aaa30144c38401669ff79db187cbd1acd4010005bcc9a8a401248cac034489850166a081bacbbdd7a8a4820100c23c0100

    Don't use PowerShell in the Power menu, i.e. go back to using Command Prompt ('cos we're not all geeks... ):

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    ; Start - Use CMD on right-click power menu (Creators Update, version 1703)

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
    "DontUsePowerShellOnWinX"=dword:00000001
    Again, you need to sign out/sign in or restart for change to take effect.

    So you can create multiple manual restore points without getting errors due to the restriction policy.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    ; System Restore Points - Disable the default 24-hour frequency restriction
    ; See https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/lib...(v=vs.85).aspx for more info

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore]
    "SystemRestorePointCreationFrequency"=dword:00000000
    This came about as the result of a query here on WSL, which is when I first realised there was a restriction.
