I have a USB flash drive with a large capacity. I understand that it needs to be transferred on to that but how do I go about doing so?

While there is a portable version, you can just install it and then use the program to boot into Safe Mode with Networking.

It does advise doing some pre steps but you've already run a chkdsk /r and it gets involved to run a sfc /scannow on a XP machine because you usually need a XP install disk.

Anyway, have a look at it www.tweaking.com

Hit the link then the Direct Download button under the Installer section.

Don't forget to create a system image before running the program.

When you select the Repairs it will auto create a registry back up, but I always prefer the belt 'n braces of a system image.

Do you not fancy creating a system image onto external media and running the free Windows Repair program from www.tweaking.com

I'll try your earlier suggestion - take out all on the start up menu and reintroduce them one by one.

Okay but the repair program could repair your restore points among other things.
