    Share The Rent

It's back-to-school for most students around the country.
Now they need math explanations again.
This problem is a sample SAT question (calculator OK).
The solution can be found by logical "guess & check" but that doesn't tell a student how to solve the problem algebraically.

    Only algebraic solutions accepted:

A group of roommates equally shared the $6,000 rent for an apartment. When four of the roommates move out, those roommates remaining still shared the $6,000 rent equally,
but each roommate's share of the rent increased by $250. How many roommates were there originally?

You have large apartments over there - about the size of a small city!

They probably didn't get along with one another -- that's why four left!

Precisely, that is why 4 probably left the others holding the bag. I suppose this should have been written by the test creators as a "house" to be more likely to hold a large number of (college) students.

    BATcher: good solution.
