Gizmo has a good article Best VPN Services for 2017, worth a read.

You need to focus on the purpose you have in mind for this when reading these reviews since there is a ton of information. I am just trying to hide information from my ISP (they are now allowed to collect and sell our connection information). Here are two additional reviews of these services which may be helpful:

    https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2403388,00.asp

    https://www.lifewire.com/best-vpn-se...viders-4061659

I recently was trying to pick one of these and had settled on NordVPN and Private Internet Access (PIA) as the final two contenders and was going to choose based on cost. I had read about the price of them in the reviews but only saw this page when I went to review current NordVPN pricing (reviews often have older pricing):

    https://nordvpn.com/order/

Nowhere does it show their two-year deal. PIA also previously had a two-year pricing offer, which I believe no longer exists. However, after choosing PIA, I found this page for NordVPN with the two-year pricing::

    https://nordvpn.com/order/?coupon=2YDeal2017

Good luck. A lot of information to digest.

If you're looking for privacy and anonymity, I would not go with a free VPN service, unless it was a temporary free trial period. The only way a free service makes any money is to sell the information it has access to; in other words, the VPN is gathering your information, developing a profile on you, and selling ads based on that information. So while they might not sell information that personally identifies you, they are spying on you; and how can you be sure that they aren't selling personally identifying information about you?

Not all VPN's really do anonymise, some do, some just pretend.

This overview might help you decide which is best for you:

    P.S.
I've had the personal experience that VyprVPN (Golden Frog partnered with Giganews) on simple request did communicate my IP to IP-Echelon.
Needless to say I terminated my VyprVPN subscription.

Yes indeed. The Gizmo article I linked above does just that, breaking the recommendations down as follows:

    Best VPN’s for anonymity

VPNs with the fastest network speeds

Best VPNs for BitTorrent and P2P users

    Easiest to use VPNs

Best VPNs for watching NetFlix, HBO and similar geo-restricted services. Note: This is a fast changing area as services like Netflix try to stop VPNs and VPNs try to bypass new service restrictions.

Best VPNs to bypass national firewalls

    Best value VPNs

    Best Free VPN Offering
