If you use Foxit Reader or PhantomPDF...

Last month (Aug 17) 2 zero-day advisories were issued for Foxit Reader and PhantomPDF. You can read more about them in this Busting Myths in Foxit Reader article.

A forum thread shows some Foxit Reader users were unhappy with the company's initial stance that it wasn't going to do anything.

The company subsequently released a Security Advisory (Aug 22) that the issue would be resolved with the release of Foxit Reader 8.3.2 (due Aug 25).

Foxit Reader 8.3.2.25013 is available for download from here.

    Hope this helps...

Thanks Rick. Since Adobe is dumping Adobe Reader XI soon, I was looking into getting Foxit to figure it out, so this was timely.

Just so you are aware, I've raised a query on the Foxit forum about why the latest version includes 2 persistent established outbound connections and what's their purpose.

Interesting query, I think I'll wait to install until after you receive an answer. I already have Foxit Phantom PDF on my HP laptop that I upgraded to W10, it came with the program pre-installed with W7 and continued through the upgrade.
That's why I was thinking of going to it on my W7 computers.

Hmm, I just uninstalled Foxit and installed PDF-XChange Editor, which I used successfully for years before [called PDF-XChange Viewer] then.

Iirc there was some other Foxit issue last year…

Looks like they are in no hurry to answer Rick's question.

Rick, looks like the prudent thing to do is wait for ver. 9 to finish beta ( from the reply you received from Lisa ).

It's an interesting reply which, unfortunately, didn't answer why the Start page and Advertisement need an always-on connection, especially as I always switch these off in Preferences. Still, I don't mind a potential bit of flakiness so I've taken Lisa up on her offer to have a look at the beta of v9.

Let me know your thoughts on the beta of v9. I'm not much into beta's so I will probably wait for their release after beta.

    Hey Y'all,

Tried to D/L today on 2 machines this AM and kept telling me to check my connection (work fine by the way). Tried this PM after getting home from bowling w/same results!

That's strange. I've just downloaded FoxitReader832_enu_Setup_Prom.exe from https://www.foxitsoftware.com/downloads/ (using Edge in Win 10) with no problems. If anything the download was faster than usual. Also just tried from a Win 7 PC a few minutes later with the same result... a much faster download than usual.

    Rick,

Tried that w/o problem. I was trying to use the builtin upgrade option that kept failing.

    Unfortunately, I already have:
    FoxitVersion.PNG

I was hoping for a newer version!

I know it's no help but I've just tried the internal updater (on a Win 7 PC) and it worked fine for me to update from 8.0.0 to 8.3.2.25013... so it looks like you already have the latest available version.

Unfortunately it's a little difficult to give any details about the beta as I've been specifically asked by my contact at Foxit to "please make sure to keep this version INTERNAL". It's not clear whether this means the beta installer itself or screenshots, etc. but IMO it's only fair to not give anything away.

However, given the reason why I contacted Foxit support in the first place and was subsequently allowed access to the beta version of Foxit Reader v9, I guess it's OK to say that after a couple of brief external connections during installation, once I had configured it to Disable all features which require internet connection I have seen no external connections from it at all despite ongoing logging using CurrPorts.

    I must admit... I'm impressed.
