Formatting Images Lost with Size Change

I want to change the size of my PowerPoint presentations from standard width to wide screen. When I go into Master View and make the change, the photograph I use for the title slide and the colored bar I use on the left side of every other slide gets erased from all the slides. I can manually add them back in but this seems like very strange behavior to me. Is there a way to avoid the erasures when changing the slide size?

One way to avoid this is to cut those to the clipboard before changing the setup and then pasting them back in.

I don't know what the logic is to adapt images to a page size but perhaps you get a different result if you drag them fully onto the page before resizing.

Out of interest, what happens if you click on the Design tab > Customize > Slide Size and then click Widescreen (16:9)?
