Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 8

A friend of mine is trying to upgrade an old PC from Windows XP (32 Bit) to Windows 8 (32 Bit). When he inserts in the Windows 8 upgrade DVD, he recieves the error message I'm attaching. Has anyone experienced this when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 8?

Also, can he perform a direct upgrade from XP to 8, or will it require a clean install?

He's never performed a clean install of Windows before, so I'm not sure if he'd want to take the PC to a PC support shop to have the upgrade performed if it becomes too complex. He lives out of state so it's something I couldn't troubleshoot in-person with him.

    Thanks!

A clean install is required because there is no "upgrade" path from XP to 8/8.1.

Good link and I'll share that with him, and I thought so on the Clean Install. It's likely something he isn't going to want to mess with, but I'll send him the links anyway. I'll ask him how old is this PC since it might not be worth the headache upgrading it.

Found out another tidbit on this. He's already used Win 8 on his other PC prior to upgrading it to Windows 10. I explained to him just because his PC is running Windows 10 now doesn't mean his Windows 8 key will magically work on his XP machine. He'd have to purchase a new Windows license. I told him best option is consider a new PC for Christmas. :-)
