    Word 97 Autotext Entries

Version: Word 97 SR-2. We have created a group of many templates and one of the templates, which consists of equations and autotext entries (approx 100), is consistently revealing Dr Watson after the template has been ran when the user tries to save the .doc file. I recreated all equations and converted all 100 of the autotext entries to .rtf files and back to .doc files. I also rebuilt the template and the users are still getting Dr Watson when they try to save the .doc file. Has anyone experienced problems like this when having a large amount of autotext entries within a template? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Not a very helpful response - just to say that it's unlikely the template problems are relating to the autotexts - 100 shouldn't be a problem (unless they are truly and unusually massive). This might point more to problems with the equations (but can't offer any help with that).
Another question: how large is the template file itself? - if it gets too large, this can cause instability.

    Re: Word 97 Autotext Entries

I agree that it isn't the number of AutoText entries that would be causing a problem. Among other things, the AutoText becomes just text (or graphics or whatever) when it is inserted into a document.

Do your autotext entries involve automatic numbering or bullets? If so, that could be the source of your problem.

sad]Word's bullets and numbering feature is very unstable. It is tied to registry entries that change unpredictably. The more a document using automatic bullets or numbering is edited, the more problems it causes in that document and on the system. It can result in corrupted documents and random application of bullets. This has to do with the Gallery concept. Autotext entries based on different Gallery lists would compound the problem and accelerate corruption. Word may be applying Gallery lists to your templates without your knowledge if you have AutoFormat as you Type turned on for numbering.

If you tie your numbering organization to styles, you are likely to be able to keep your sanity. For more on how to do this see:

    Hope this helps.
