Screen vs Print symbol (WORD 2000 SR-1)

I have Australian regionalisation. I recently changed to Garamond font for Normal style. I noticed today that the $ symbol prints with a double vertical bar (which I presume is USA style) despite the symbol being its normal single vertical bar on screen and in Print Preview. Times New Roman and Arial both print with a single vertical bar as always - which downunder is correct.

I got the same result whether printing to my HPIIIP (still going strong) or my Epson 740.

Any ideas on how to correct this please - other than reverting to Times New Roman?

Some fonts are substituted during printing, so what you see is not always precisely what you get. Where the font substitute table is depends on your printer driver and version of Windows, but that is what I would check first.
