1. ## Calculating Time (2002)

What is the function or formula to subtract a number of seconds from a specific time? For example, if a time is formatted as 19:14:29, how can I subtract 3400 seconds from that time and have the result expressed in the same format, i.e., 00:00:00? Thanks!

2. ## Re: Calculating Time (2002)

Dates and times are in fact numbers, expressed in units of 1 day = 86400 seconds. So if 19:14:29 is in cell A1, and 3400 is in cell A2, use =A1-A2/86400 to subtract. Then use the format painter to copy the format of cell A1 to the result.

3. ## Re: Calculating Time (2002)

If the time is in A1, then:

=A1-3400/86400

86400 is the number of seconds in one day.

Thanks very much!!!!

Hi Jimmy-W,

You need to understand that time is recorded in Excel as a decimal of one day, so your 19 hours is recorded as 0.8017 etc. To subtract 3400 seconds you need to divide this amount by (24*60*60) the number of seconds in a day and you should get 18:17:49.
