    Table of Contents (2000)

When creating a table of contents, I heard it was possible to link my roman numerals in the table to the actual spot in my paper. I need this because I am constantly changing the paper's layout and order and I want the page numbers to update correctly without me having to change them manually each time.

Anyone know how to do this?

    Re: Table of Contents (2000)

If you use the Heading styles (e.g., Heading 1, Heading 2, etc.) in the body of your paper for the headings you want in your table of contents, you then can pretty much click your way to a Table of Contents that can be easily updated. If you prefer not to use Heading styles, you can "mark" the headings, but I've actually never done this in Word, so I don't know the steps.

Afterthought: I guess I should mention that you use Insert > Index and Tables... to call up the dialogs.

Does this answer the question or do you need to know about automatic numbering within the body of the paper?
