Computer Running VERY slow (XP Pro)

    <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Hi all, me again

This morning when I went to use my computer, for some reason it started running <font color=red>really</font color=red> slow. <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15> My hubby was on it last night, and said it was running just fine when he shut it down.

I have Norton System Works, and normally that works great giving my computer the once over. However, this morning every time I tried to do most anything, the program stopped responding. <img src=/S/broke.gif border=0 alt=broke width=31 height=23> Here's everything I've tried with no avail: <img src=/S/weep.gif border=0 alt=weep width=21 height=16>

The first thing I did was reboot
I ran the OSC (one step check) in Norton System works
    - after 15 min of scanning my system, and never moved off the first thing on the list I aborted that
After deciding that Nortons just wasn't going to work for me today:
I went to internet options (which took forever to open the control panel) <img src=/S/yawn.gif border=0 alt=yawn width=15 height=15>
Deleted all my cookies & Temp Internet files
    I cleaned out my casch
    I ran windows defrag
    was gonna do the Disk Cleanup - but it wouldn't open either & kept "not responding" <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>
I've shut down all my programs running in the background
I have my virus scan scheduled to run every day - I even ran an extra one this morning
    And still its <font color=red>really</font color=red> slow <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>
    It took me a good <font color=red>long</font color=red> time to get here to ask you guys for help. <img src=/S/yawn.gif border=0 alt=yawn width=15 height=15>

I just hope I can get this posted before my IE stops responding. I'm copying the post every so often just in case. But if it does..... <img src=/S/mad.gif border=0 alt=mad width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/scream.gif border=0 alt=scream width=15 height=15>

    What haven't I done? Or what can I do? <img src=/S/help.gif border=0 alt=help width=23 height=15>

    Any and all thoughts here would be greatly appreciated <img src=/S/please.gif border=0 alt=please width=31 height=23> <img src=/S/please.gif border=0 alt=please width=31 height=23>

    Thanks guys,

Re: Computer Running VERY slow (XP Pro)

It's very, very likely you haven't done anything that caused your computer to slow. The things you listed were all logical places to check, but I would do a couple things. Download and run Adaware 6.0 and Patrick Kolla's Spyware Search and Destroy. Both are easy to run--and here is a little install/run tutorial I linked to.

Also run the System File Checker by going to your command prompt and typing two commands first "sfc /purgecache" and let it run quickly, then "sfc /scannow"--will take about 20 or more minutes. This tool would replace damaged files with intact ones. Put your XP CD in, in case it needs to take files from it (it will probably prompt you to and you may have to repeat hitting retry several times to boost it along).

These three steps are worth trying. Spyware and BHO's are often causes of sudden slow downs.
