    Can't Edit Headers & Footers (2000/SP-1)

I have been asked for help for which I have no answer. I am anxious to learn if any of you have ideas on how to rectify this problem described below by Brian:

When editing an existing document, viewing headers and footers, the footer or header will appear to be grayed out and will not let me edit it. However, if I try later, it works fine (even leaving the document open). Several of my colleagues have experienced this problem also.

Documents were originally created in various versions of MS Word, including 2002. Background [within the header/footer] does not change. When I click View -> Headers & Footers they are uneditable, but sometimes it works fine. It's more of a fluke than anything, but nearly everyone else at my place of employment is having this trouble. No styles, no watermarks, and nothing really out of the ordinary. The documents are the epitome of ordinary. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Like I said, this is happening with "various" word documents, not just a particular set.

    Thanks for any help!

    Re: Can't Edit Headers & Footers (2000/SP-1)

    Hi Diane:
It's hard to tell from the description. These documents may have something in common. If a document is protected for forms, the header/footer cannot be edited, although I haven't heard of an intermittent problem with viewing the header/footer. Other than that, perhaps there is an add-in causing problems. See <post#=197827>post 197827</post#> for a series of steps to check this.
