1. ## excel formula (2002)

hi all . ..this is my first subscription to this lovely site ..
and my first Q. is .. I have a long list in the bottom of the spread sheet ./ and it goes on like this .. A: 206318 , B: 461 , C: 42 , next line A:206318 , B:463 , C: 41,.. etc.
, I want when I'm in the top of the spread sheet , when even I enter the first two cells ,, the third one .. gets filled in auto. i.e. A: 206318 , B: 461 , C: the formula checks and matchs the best result from the botton list and copy the value in .. so thanks for the help in advance ,,

Welcome to the Lounge.

Not sure exactly what you are after.

I think you might be trying to do something like that requested in <post#=283858>post 283858</post#>. If so, the response there should answer it. If you are looking for something different could you elaborate?

Steve

3. ## Re: excel formula (2002)

Can you define what the "best result from the botton list " is?

4. ## Re: excel formula (2002)

I still think my answer in <post#=283862>post 283862</post#> seems to be what you are after and I have adapted it.

Since you are using numbers, instead of concatenating I used the formula for the lookup column to be "The first number + the second/1000 "(I assumed that the 2nd number was always less than 3 digits, if not the case adjust to divide by 10,000 for 4 digits max, 100,000 for 5 digits max etc)

I added a column which combines the numbers and then you lookup the combined numbers. I assumed by best, you had to find a match in one of the pages.

I had to use an IF to search the first sheet and if the combo was not found lookup in the second. You can do this for 7 sheets and at this point you will have to rethink your layout since only 7 IFs are allowed.

It is still not clear what you want. Several questions:

1- What do you want in column C if there is not an exact match for what is in A and B in the other sheets? In this case, what is the "best result from the botton list "?

2- What do you wnat in column C if there are two or more rows that match A and B?

3- How many sheets are there that contain the tables of data, and how can they be identified? Do the sheets have a name that identifies them and containing a table.

9. ## Re: excel formula (2002)

i SEE THAT U HAVE ADDED ONE MORE COLOUM , AND JUST ONE LITTLE (Q). U MIGHT THINK IS AS STUPID .. WELL ... .. SAY IF i WANA ADD UP MORE INFO IN SHEET 1 AND SHEET 2 , WHICH i HAVE DID .. AND USED THE ONE OF THE NEW ENTERED DATA'S IN SHEET 1 .. BUT THE FORMULA WON'T WORK IN SHEET 3 .. I MIGHT DID SOMETHING WRONG .. OR i DIDN'T SORT IT OUT .. OR WHAT SHOULD i DO .. PLS . THANKS

Your caps lock key seems to have become stuck. Typing in all caps in a forum is the equivalent of shouting - don't do it all the time. Thank you <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

11. ## Re: excel formula (2002)

I am not completely sure of what you are asking.

If you add more data to the columns in Sheet1 and sheet2 you will have to copy the formula from col A down the rows.
In the formulas for sheet3 you will also have to adjust the ranges for the lookup. (you can just change it in the first one, then copy that to the others.
